The Connecticut Johnson House, “The Glass House”

June 25th 2009

The Johnson house, also known as “The Glass House,” is a very sophisticated steel-framed glass house, that has attracted attention all over the world. For a box style house, it has a high degree of sophistication. The theme of the house is that of a game of chess caught in the moment of checkmate. The design is nearly completely open glass and has some of the largest windows in Connecticut, compared to other architecture during the same era, 1949.

Many have criticized the functionality of such a home, as not able to offer enough privacy as a true home should. The creator, Philip Johnson, said this “…Comfort is not a function of beauty… purpose is not necessary to make a building beautiful…sooner or later we will fit our buildings so that they can be used…where form comes from I don’t know, but it has nothing at all to do with the functional or sociological aspects of our architecture.” I am not sure what that means, but there you go.

The truth is, no one actually lives in it, and it attracts many art loving tourists each year. On the same grounds are many modern sculptures, as well as beautiful flower gardens. All visitors to the Glass House site are required to purchase a tour ticket. Tours are recommended for ages 10 and up. All tours cover a half mile of uneven terrain so please choose shoes suitable for diverse terrain. No food or drink is allowed on the site, with the exception of water.

This religious rite of passage signifies a child has reached an age of discretion and is prepared to accept Christ and his teachings into his or her life just as he or she accepts the symbolic wafer. Likewise, it is also a moment for family members to celebrate the maturity of the child and honor him or her with special gifts and presents.

One gift that is sure to be remembered is a First Communion cross necklace jewelry that acts as a reminder to the wearer of their Redeemer and His sacrificial act. Christian Gifts & Jewelry offer a wide variety of cross necklaces that are perfect for First Communion or as a religious gift for any other occasion. Why I Quit Watching Television

June 24th 2009

I know I am different than most, but that does not bother me. Three years ago, my wife and I realized how much of our life we were dedicating to channel surfing, and watching mediocre television shows. We made the decision to get rid of our cable television, and detach our rabbit ears. We were going to find other things to do with our time. We love a good movie, so now we keep our eyes open for a good dvd once or twice a week.

Was it hard to leave television? Well, for a few weeks, yes. After work, I would sit down on the couch and out of habit, reach for the remote control. I would have to focus and decide what I was going to do with my time. We had success, however, and resorted to spending time with our children, reading books, playing games, going on walks, relaxing outdoors, and inviting friends to come over.

When my friends or coworkers learn that I have stayed away from television for three years, they initially cannot believe it, and act as if I am crazy. They then compliment me and admit that they never could do it themselves.

Looking back over these television free years, I know I can never go back. For one thing, television has come a long way since the years of the Dean Martin Show. There is just so much on tv right now that I really do not want in my life, and especially do not want my children exposed to. Through living life, they will obviously get exposed to it all, but I am certainly not going to voluntarily invite it into my home. I recommend it.

The Frustrations of Working For a Mess, Literally

June 23rd 2009

One of my biggest pet peeves is working for someone who is not organized. I mean seriously, if you are going to have your own company, then you need to have your ducks in a row. No one wants to work with someone who is a pathetic mess.

How can you help someone if there is no uniformity? The reason I am venting about this is because I am sick of working for this health office (I’m not going to name names). First of all, the guy has his own company and he is so not a people person. I have only been there for about 6 months and there are still things that I was never trained how to do. And then do you know what happens, when he asks me to do those things that I was never trained to do he gets all frustrated because I can’t help him.

Well, maybe if I was trained in the first place than I could help him out and make the days run smoother! He needs to have some kind of employee training management or some kind of training tracking software so that he knows where an employee is during the training process and if they get trained properly. I mean all he would have to do is finish training me and I could be in charge of the employee training management to make sure that the next fresh employee will be properly trained on all aspects of the job. We could then use some kind of training tracking software so that the person could be trained maybe through the Internet by passing off some quizzes or something.

Seriously, it cannot be that difficult.

The Natural Beauty of Eyelash Extensions

June 22nd 2009

Since I was ten years old, up until I was a teenager, I took dance classes. I enrolled in everything from hip-hop to tap, and consequently, was involved in quite a few dance recitals. Now, I’ve never claimed to be a good dancer, but I’ve definitely had the dancer experience of caking on makeup so that my face could be seen on stage–but in normal light, I looked like clown. Aside from the painted-on blush and thick swabs of foundation that made me look more like a plastic doll than a real person, I mostly remember the fake eyelashes I had to wear. They were a pain to put on, but unlike the rest of the makeup fiasco, I loved making my eyelashes look longer. My eyes looked bigger, brighter, and bluer.

But, much like the rest of the dance-makeup applications, I couldn’t wear the fake eyelashes outside of the dance arena because it was too obvious that they weren’t my real eyelashes. I wanted long eyelashes, but I didn’t want to look like I was trying too hard. Besides, I saw other people who wore fake eyelashes in their day-to-day lives, and I knew how fake they really looked.

But I recently discovered a new alternative–eyelash extensions. With eyelash extensions, specialists attach a natural-looking, natural-feeling synthetic eyelash to each individual existing eyelash. Not only do eyelashes look natural, but because of the attention to detail and the absence of strips and gloppy glues, they look real. And you don’t have to use mascara or eyelash curlers on them which is actually healthy for your eyelashes.

And a small tip: Beauty organizations that provide eyelash extensions in Austin, TX, are some of the foremost in the country. If anyone wants to make their eyes bigger and brighter, naturally, without a ton of makeup, then eyelash extensions are definitely something to look into.

How You Can Help Others Learn English

June 19th 2009

Bicycling down the dirt-paved streets of a small Mexican town, I was used to the slobbering dogs, children playing, merchants hawking trinkets and old clothes. Everything bore the marks of poverty, but it was still simple and happy, too. Which is why I never expected, in my wildest dreams, to see that red sports car pull up alongside me.

I had been serving as an LDS missionary in Mexico for just over a year, and my Spanish had finally become consistently comfortable with both friends and strangers. Which was a good thing, too, because I was immediately at a loss for words when the car’s window rolled down. A man, no older than 35 and easily rich by even American standards, was smiling gregariously at me, while his stunning girlfriend peered eagerly from the passenger seat.. He quickly explained that they were opening up a private school and were hungry for native speakers to teach their English classes. I awkwardly tried to explain that I was busy with my missionary work and wouldn’t have time to be a full-time teacher. Exasperated, the caballero exclaimed: “We’ll pay you twice whatever they’re paying you!”

As my companion and I laughed about this later, I couldn’t help but think: people across the world are desperate to learn English. And for good reason–it’s become, if not the international language, certainly the international language of business. Learning English becomes an essential step for many hoping to enter the global marketplace or expand their opportunities for the future.

Which is why the International Language Programs is a fantastic opportunity to help others out in this regard while allowing you to see a little bit of the world. The ILP coordinates English-speaking volunteers with service abroad opportunities to teach English in Russia, China, Mexico, and the Ukraine. For less than a semester’s worth of school, you can immerse yourself in a foreign culture and help others learn your native language. You can even earn university internship credits as well. Most importantly, you help young children prepare themselves for the future by learning another language. Visit http://www.ilp.org for information and to see how you can bless the lives of others through service abroad opportunities.

Denver Gutter Cleaning and Protection

June 19th 2009

It’s summer and the snow shovels and salt are stowed away for next season. Lawn turf and fertilizer have been spread, flower and vegetable beds are planted and the golf clubs are cleaned and waiting. But wait, there’s one more thing to do before hitting the course: clean the gutters and put screen coverings over them to keep leaves and debris out. Check to see if there are areas where water pools and creates a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. The

Denver gutter

is a very likely place for breeding mosquitoes and Colorado is not out of the West Nile Virus woods yet.

While a job like cleaning gutters is something many homeowners easily dismiss or forget, it is important to keep the gutters clean and clear of debris and standing water. While cleaning, add the screens to ensure leaves and general gunk will not collect and clog the gutter.

During the rainy season if the gutters and downspouts are clogged, you might have a waterfall over entryways or even worse, water seeping into and eroding foundations. During the winter when ice forms in clogged gutters, ice dams form and create icicles that are danger in two ways: falling icicles and dangerous sheets of ice forming on the sidewalk or entryway below. Once the ice starts melting, water may seep under the eaves and behind the exterior wall causing water damage.

If the golf clubs are too tempting, call a professional to inspect the gutters for leaks, clean them and cap them. Then you won’t have such a guilty conscience.

I’m Pregnant–Now What?

June 15th 2009

For many women, finding out they’re pregnant can radically alter their vision of the future, making everything cloudy and uncertain. Ironically, even though one can generally predict that the baby will be born in roughly 9 months time, everything else about the coming days, months, and years seem up in the air. For women that might be or are pregnant, it is more important than ever to think through all your options and know what exactly you want to do next.

These days, most women start thinking about pregnancy before they’re mothers or even want to be mothers. Women that are sexually active should carefully consider and decide on their birth control methods–i.e., birth control pills. For those that have had unprotected intercourse and are worried about getting pregnant, there are emergency contraceptives like the “morning-after” pill, though they should never be considered for habitual use. Also, it will not work if you are already pregnant, and many abortion clinics will require a pregnancy test before they administer the pill.

For women that are indeed pregnant, there are many different options available, from carrying a baby full-term and keeping it, putting the baby up for adoption, or ending the pregnancy early through an abortion. Each carry a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional effects that should be discussed carefully with a counselor and an OB/GYN to know which is best for your circumstances. For those planning on an abortion, there is also the choice between taking an abortion pill or deciding on a surgical abortion. This decision will also depend on many factors, including primarily the stage the pregnancy is currently in.

Whatever your case may be, there are many women care clinics that offer a variety of planning services and can help you through each step of the pregnancy process.

An Immigration Attorney Has Tips for Interviews

June 15th 2009

It is important for an Immigration Applicant who is preparing for an interview with a representative of a federal agency, to be aware of the need to present, “confidence”. Living in the United States where English is the second language, creates challenges for Applicant but your

New York immigration attorney

can give important advice on how prepare for an interview.

The following tips are not a guarantee for successful application, but it will help the applicant demonstrate a measure of “confidence”:

• Be on time: Show responsibility by being on time for a meeting–any meeting–including meetings with your New York immigration lawyer.
• Wear appropriate attire: It is important to look well groomed and it also shows your respect to the other party.
• Shake hands: When the interviewer extends a hand to shake hands, comply with a confident grip.
• Eye contact: Direct eye contact is important. It shows the interviewer that you are honest, trustworthy and dependable. It also shows your interest in establishing good rapport.
• Understand the question: When you are asked a question, make sure you understand the question completely, before attempting to give an answer. If you don’t understand the question, ask the interviewer to repeat the question and to clarify it for you.
• Follow all instructions by the immigration attorney.

It is equally important to demonstrate to your New York immigration attorney that you have a definite interest in achieving success as an immigrant on the way to becoming a citizen of the U.S.
